Brightwork is the polished bare metal surface on your aircraft: leading edges, exhaust stacks, spinner surfaces, and polished aluminum panels. It requires specialized compounds, aviation-grade wool and foam, and a technique that will not damage adjacent painted surfaces. What Is Aircraft Brightwork Polishing?

Brightwork polishing is the appearance care work performed on the bare polished aluminum and stainless surfaces of the aircraft, primarily the leading edges of the wings, tail, and engine inlets, as well as spinner surfaces on propeller aircraft and exhaust stacks. Unlike painted surfaces, brightwork does not have a clear coat protecting it, which means it oxidizes quickly, water spots easily, and dulls after every flight. Restoring it requires a multi-stage process that cuts oxidation, refines the finish, and seals the surface.

The brightwork surface finish is one of the most visible indicators of aircraft condition. A well-maintained brightwork profile is instantly recognizable at the FBO ramp, and a neglected one is equally obvious.

How often does brightwork need polishing?

Depends on how the aircraft is stored and how often it flies. Hangared aircraft with regular use benefit from quarterly polish. Aircraft based outdoors or with irregular use may need work every one to two months to prevent pitting.

Can brightwork be over-polished?

Yes. Every polish cycle removes a microscopic layer of metal. Aggressive cutting on brightwork that only needs refining wastes material. This is why the assessment step matters. We recommend the least aggressive process that achieves the finish you want.

Do you polish exhaust stacks?

Yes. Exhaust stack polish is a separate service line because the metal is different and the contamination profile (heat discoloration, soot) requires different chemistry.

Will polishing damage the paint next to the brightwork?

Not if it is done correctly. Every job starts with masking to protect adjacent painted surfaces from cutting compound contamination. This is a standard step that we do not skip.

Can spinner-only polish be booked separately?

Yes. Spinner-only polish is a common quick service on turboprops and propeller aircraft. Book it as a standalone or as an add-on to another service.
